Chapter on Adultery – Name of the Jew who covered the verse of stoning in the mentioned story
Hadith 4435
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَسْمَاءَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جُوَيْرِيَةُ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " رَجَمَ يَهُودِيَّيْنِ رَجُلا وَامْرَأَةً زَنَيَا " . فَأَتَتْ بِهِمَا الْيَهُودُ إِِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالُوا : إِِنَّ هَذَيْنِ زَنَيَا ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا تَجِدُونَ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ ؟ " قَالُوا : نَفْضَحْهُمَا وَنَجْلِدُهُمَا . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كَذَبْتُمْ ، وَاللَّهِ إِِنَّ فِيهَا آيَةَ الرَّجْمِ ، فَأَتَوْا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَاتْلُوهَا إِِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ " . وَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلامٍ : كَذَبْتُمْ ، وَاللَّهِ إِِنَّ فِيهَا آيَةَ الرَّجْمِ . قَالَ : فَأَتَوْا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَنَشَرُوهَا ، وَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ يُقَالُ لَهُ : ابْنُ صُورِيَا أَعْوَرُ ، فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى آيَةِ الرَّجْمِ ، وَجَعَلَ يَقْرَأُ مَا قَبْلَهَا وَمَا بَعْدَهَا ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلامٍ : ارْفَعْ يَدَكَ ، فَرَفَعَ يَدَهُ فَوَجَدَ آيَةَ الرَّجْمِ ، فَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ : نَعَمْ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فِيهَا الرَّجْمُ ، فَأَمَرَ بِهِمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَرُجِمَا ، قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ : وَأَنَا فِيمَنْ رَجَمَهُمَا يَوْمَئِذٍ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had a Jewish woman and a Jewish man stoned who had committed adultery. The Jews brought both of them to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him: Both of them have committed adultery. So the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What ruling do you find in the Torah? They replied: We disgrace them and flog them. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You have spoken falsely. By Allah! There is a verse regarding stoning in it. Bring the Torah and recite it if you are truthful. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have lied. By Allah! There is a verse regarding stoning in it. The narrator states: They brought the Torah and opened it. A man from among the Jews named Ibn Suriya was present; he placed his hand over the verse about stoning and read what was before and after it. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Lift your hand. When he lifted his hand, the verse about stoning became apparent. The Jews then said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! There is indeed a ruling about stoning in it. So, by the order of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), both of them (the Jewish man and woman) were stoned. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: On that day, I was also among those who stoned them.
