Chapter on Adultery – Clarification that one must avoid what Allah forbade, especially regarding chastity
Hadith 4414
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الزَّهْرَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو شِهَابٍ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَيُّ الذَّنْبِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ؟ قَالَ : " أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ " قَالَ : ثُمَّ أَيُّ ؟ قَالَ : " أَنْ تَزْنِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ " . فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَصْدِيقَهَا : وَالَّذِينَ لا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلا بِالْحَقِّ وَلا يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا سورة الفرقان آية 68 .
- Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: It was asked from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): Which sin is the greatest in the sight of Allah? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That you associate a partner with Allah, while He (Allah) created you. (The questioner) asked: Then which one? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That you commit adultery with your neighbor’s wife. (The narrator states) So Allah Almighty revealed this verse in confirmation of it: "And those who do not worship anyone along with Allah, and do not kill any soul whom Allah has forbidden (to kill), except by right, and do not commit adultery. Whoever does this shall meet the penalty of sin."
