Section on Mourning – Prohibition for a woman in waiting period to wear jewelry or use henna
Hadith 4306
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي إِِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ طَهْمَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي بُدَيْلٌ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ شَيْبَةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " الْمُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا لا تَلْبَسُ الْمُعَصْفَرَ مِنَ الثِّيَابِ ، وَلا الْمُمَشَّقَةَ ، وَلا الْحُلِيَّ ، وَلا تَخْتَضِبُ وَلا تَكْتَحِلُ " .
Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "A woman whose husband passes away shall not wear colored clothes (during her 'iddah), shall not wear adorned clothes, shall not wear jewelry, shall not apply henna, and shall not apply kohl."
