Section on Mourning – Instruction for a woman to mourn her husband for four months and ten days
Hadith 4302
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِِدْرِيسَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ وَحَفْصَةَ أمهات المؤمنين ، أن رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لا يَحِلُّ لامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمَ الآخِرِ أَنْ تَحُدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلاثَ لَيَالٍ ، إِِلا عَلَى زَوْجٍ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا " .
Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) and Lady Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrate that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not permissible for any woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for anyone who dies for more than three days, except in the case of her husband; for him, the mourning period is four months and ten days."
