Abu Salamah narrates: It was asked from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about a woman who gives birth to a child forty days after her husband's death. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: She should observe the waiting period (iddah) according to whichever of the two prescribed periods is completed last. Abu Salamah says: I said, "Has Allah Almighty not stated: 'The waiting period of pregnant women ends when they give birth'?" Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am with my nephew, meaning Abu Salamah. So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) sent Kuraib to the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that they could ask them if they had heard any hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this matter. Those wives sent this reply to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): Sayyidah Subai’ah Aslamiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to a child forty days after her husband's death, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arranged her marriage (before the completion of four months and ten days).
