Explicit narration that Barirah’s husband was a slave, not free
Hadith 4273
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدٌ ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنّ زَوْجَ بَرِيرَةَ كَانَ عَبْدًا ، يُقَالُ لَهُ : مُغِيثٌ ، كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِِلَيْهِ يَطُوفُ خَلْفَهَا يَبْكِي وَدُمُوعُهُ تَسِيلُ عَلَى لِحْيَتِهِ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِلْعَبَّاسِ : " يَا عَبَّاسُ ، أَلا تَعْجَبُ مِنْ شِدَّةِ حُبِّ مُغِيثٍ بَرِيرَةَ ، وَمِنْ شِدَّةِ بُغْضِ بَرِيرَةَ مُغِيثًا " ، فَقَالَ لَهَا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَوْ رَاجَعْتِيهِ فَإِِنَّهُ أَبُو وَلَدِكِ " . قَالَتْ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَتَأْمُرُنِي بِهِ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِِنَّمَا أَنَا شَافِعٌ " . قَالَتْ : فَلا حَاجَةَ لِي فِيهِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Barirah’s husband was a slave, his name was Mughith. This scene is still before my eyes: he was following behind her, weeping, and his tears were flowing down his beard. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abbas, are you not amazed at how much Mughith loves Barirah and how much Barirah dislikes Mughith? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to that woman: If you return to him (it would be appropriate), for he is the father of your child. The woman said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Are you commanding me in this matter? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I am only interceding. So the woman said: I have no need to live with him.
