Ibn Hibban

Aamir bin Sa’d narrates from his father: In the year of the conquest of Makkah, I became severely ill in Makkah to the extent that I reached the brink of death. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came to visit me. I said to him, “O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! I have a lot of wealth and my only heir is my daughter. Should I bequeath two-thirds of my wealth?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “No.” I asked, “Half?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “No.” I said, “One third?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Bequeath one third, though even one third is much. If you leave your heirs wealthy, that is better than leaving them poor and they have to beg from people. Whatever you spend seeking Allah’s pleasure, you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you raise to your wife’s mouth (you will be rewarded for that too).” I said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Will I be left behind from my migration?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “If you remain alive after me, your status and rank will increase as a result. Perhaps you will remain alive after me so that many people will benefit from you and others will be harmed by you. O Allah! Keep the migration of my companions firm and do not turn them back on their heels. However, it is a pity for Sa’d bin Khawlah.” (The narrator says:) The Prophet (peace be upon him) expressed sorrow for him because he died in Makkah.
