Chapter: Maintenance – Clarifying that a woman receives two rewards for spending on her husband and children: charity and kinship
Hadith 4248
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَازِمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ الْمُصْطَلِقِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَخِي زَيْنَبَ امْرَأَةِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ ، قَالَتْ : خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " يَا مَعْشَرَ النِّسَاءِ ، تَصَدَّقْنَ وَلَوْ مِنْ حُلِيِّكُنَّ ، فَإِِنَّكُنَّ أَكْثَرُ أَهْلِ جَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " . قَالَتْ : وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ رَجُلا خَفِيفَ ذَاتِ الْيَدِ ، فَقَالَتْ : سَلْ لِي رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَتُجْزِئُ عَنِّي مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ النَّفَقَةُ عَلَى زَوْجِي وَأَيْتَامٍ فِي حِجْرِي ؟ . قَالَتْ : وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ أُلْقِيَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَهَابَةُ ، فَقَالَ : لا بَلْ سَلِيهِ أَنْتِ . قَالَتْ : فَانْطَلَقْتُ ، فَإِِذَا عَلَى الْبَابِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ حَاجَتُهَا حَاجَتِي اسْمُهَا زَيْنَبُ ، قَالَتْ : فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا بِلالٌ ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : سَلْ لَنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَتُجْزِئُ عَنَّا مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ النَّفَقَةُ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِنَا وَأَيْتَامٍ فِي حُجُورِنَا ؟ قَالَتْ : فَدَخَلَ بِلالٌ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، عَلَى الْبَابِ زَيْنَبُ . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَيُّ الزَّيَانِبِ ؟ " قَالَ : زَيْنَبُ امْرَأَةُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، وَزَيْنَبُ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ تَسْأَلانِ عَنِ النَّفَقَةِ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِمَا وَأَيْتَامٍ فِي حُجُورِهِمَا : أَيُجْزِئُ ذَلِكَ عَنْهُمَا مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : نَعَمْ " لَهُمَا أَجْرَانِ : أَجْرُ الْقَرَابَةِ ، وَأَجْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ " .
Lady Zainab, the wife of Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with them), narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us (women) in a sermon and said: O group of women, give charity, even if it is from your jewelry, because the majority of the inhabitants of Hell on the Day of Resurrection will be from among you. She narrates: The income of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was very little. She said (to Abdullah bin Mas’ud): Ask the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about me, that if I spend on my husband and the orphan children under my care, will it be permissible for me to do so? She narrates: The awe of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was very great. Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, rather you yourself should ask the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). She says: I went (to the Prophet’s house) and there was another woman from the Ansar at the door, who had the same issue as mine. That woman’s name was also Zainab. Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came out. I said to him: Please ask the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) for us, whether what we spend on our husbands and the orphan children under our care will suffice as charity from us. She narrates: Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went inside and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Zainab is at the door. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Which Zainab? Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Zainab, the wife of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Zainab from the Ansar. Both have asked about spending on their husbands and the orphan children under their care: will this suffice as charity from them? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, both of them will have a double reward: the reward for maintaining family ties and the reward for giving charity.
