Chapter: Maintenance – Clarifying that spending on family is better than spending in God’s cause
Hadith 4242
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْجُنَيْدِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلابَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي أَسْمَاءَ ، عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " أَفْضَلُ دِينَارٍ دِينَارٌ يُنْفِقُهُ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى عِيَالِهِ ، وَدِينَارٌ يُنْفِقُهُ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى دَابَّتِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، وَدِينَارٌ يُنْفِقُهُ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ " . قَالَ أَبُو قِلابَةَ : بَدَأَ بِالْعِيَالِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : وَأَيُّ رَجُلٍ أَعْظَمُ أَجْرًا مِنْ رَجُلٍ يُنْفِقُ عَلَى عِيَالٍ لَهُ صِغَارٍ يُعِفُّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِهِ وَيُغْنِيهِمُ اللَّهُ بِهِ .
Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The most virtuous dinar is the one which a man spends on his family, and the dinar which a man spends on his mount in the way of Allah, and the dinar which a man spends on his companions in the way of Allah. The narrator named Abu Qilabah says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the family first, then Abu Qilabah said: Who will receive more reward than the person who spends on his small children? Allah Almighty, because of this person, protects them from begging, and Allah Almighty, because of this person, makes them independent (from other people).
