Chapter: Maintenance (spending)
Hadith 4233
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلانَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، عِنْدِي دِينَارٌ فَمَا أَصْنَعُ بِهِ ؟ قَالَ : " أَنْفِقْهُ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ " . قَالَ : عِنْدِي آخَرُ فَمَا أَصْنَعُ بِهِ ؟ قَالَ : " أَنْفِقْهُ عَلَى أَهْلِكَ " . قَالَ : عِنْدِي آخَرُ ؟ قَالَ : " أَنْفِقْهُ عَلَى وَلَدِكَ " . قَالَ : عِنْدِي آخَرُ فَمَا أَصْنَعُ بِهِ ؟ قَالَ : " أَنْفِقْهُ عَلَى خَادِمِكَ " . قَالَ : عِنْدِي آخَرُ فَمَا أَصْنَعُ بِهِ ؟ قَالَ : " أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! I have one dinar, what should I do with it? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Spend it on yourself. He said: I have another one, what should I do with it? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Spend it on your wife. He asked: I have another one, what should I do with it? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Spend it on your children. He said: I have another one, what should I do with it? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Spend it on your servant. He said: I have another one, what should I do with it? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: You know best.
