Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prohibition is not established by suckling once or twice." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) I do not deny that Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) may have heard this narration from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and once he narrated it as he had heard it, and another time he narrated it on the authority of Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). This was common among the Companions; sometimes a Companion would hear something directly from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and then hear the same narration from another Companion who was more eminent and of higher rank, so once he would narrate what he had heard himself, and another time he would narrate it on the authority of that eminent Companion. Their narrating a hadith on the authority of a Companion of higher status does not indicate that they had not heard it themselves. This is exactly like the way Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated the hadith regarding the questions of Sayyiduna Jibreel (peace be upon him) about faith and Islam; he had heard this narration from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and then he also heard it from his father, so once he narrated what he had witnessed himself, and another time he narrated it on the authority of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), which he had heard from him, because in his view, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had greater status and rank.
