Chapter: Marital relations – Clarifying that a man should be gentle with his wife for lasting companionship
Hadith 4179
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ خُلِقَتْ مِنْ ضِلَعٍ ، وَلَنْ تَصْلُحَ لَكَ عَلَى طَرِيقَةٍ ، وَإِنِ اسْتَمْتَعْتَ بِهَا اسْتَمْتَعْتَ بِهَا وَبِهَا عِوَجٌ ، وَإِنَّ تُرِدْ إِقَامَتَهَا تَكْسِرْهَا ، وَكَسْرُهَا طَلاقُهَا " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, woman was created from a rib. You cannot straighten her in any way. If you can benefit from her along with her crookedness, then do so. If you try to straighten her, you will break her (or perhaps a narrator clarified this): To break her means to divorce her."
