Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We participated in a battle along with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and there were no women with us. The people said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Should we not get ourselves castrated? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade us from doing so. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered us that we should marry a woman for a garment (as dowry). Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: “O you who believe! Do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you.” (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The evidence that temporary marriage (Nikah Mut’ah) is prohibited, although it was permitted for people before, is this: Those people presented this request to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when there were no women with them, that should we get ourselves castrated? If temporary marriage had not already been prohibited, then their request would have had no meaning.
