Chapter: Prohibited marriages – Prohibition of marrying one’s foster niece
Hadith 4111
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، أَنَّ عُرْوَةَ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ حَدَّثَهُ ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، أنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ قَالَتْ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، انْكِحْ بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ لأُخْتِهَا ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " وَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ ؟ " ، قَالَتْ : نَعَمْ ، وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ يُشَارِكُنِي فِي خَيْرِ أُخْتِي ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ لا يَحِلُّ " ، قَالَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ حُدِّثْنَا أَنَّكَ تُنْكِحُ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، قَالَ : " ابْنَةُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ? ! " ، فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَوْ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي ، مَا حَلَّتْ لِي ، إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةَ ، أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَا سَلَمَةَ : ثُوَيْبَةُ ، فَلا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ ، وَلا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ " .
Sayyida Zaynab bint Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Sayyida Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Marry the daughter of Abu Sufyan. She said this regarding her sister, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you like this? She replied: Yes, I wish that my sister also shares with me in this goodness. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is not permissible. Sayyida Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! By Allah! We have been told that you want to marry Durrah, the daughter of Abu Salamah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: With the daughter of Abu Salamah? Sayyida Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If she were not my stepdaughter, even then she would not be lawful for me, because she is the daughter of my foster brother. Thuwaibah nursed both me and Abu Salamah. Do not present the proposals of your daughters and sisters before me.
