Chapter: The dowry – Permitting gold as a dowry
Hadith 4096
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الذُّهْلِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : لَقِيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَوْفٍ ، وَبِهِ وَضَرٌ مِنْ خَلُوقٍ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَهْيَمْ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ " ، قَالَ : تَزَوَّجْتُ امْرَأَةً مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ ، قَالَ : " كَمْ أَصْدَقْتَهَا ؟ " ، قَالَ : وَزْنَ نَوَاةٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَوْلِمْ وَلَوْ بِشَاةٍ " ، قَالَ أَنَسٌ : فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ قَسَّمَ لِكُلِّ امْرَأَةٍ مِنْ نِسَائِهِ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهِ مِائَةَ أَلْفٍ .
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) and there was a yellow mark on him, which was the fragrance of Khaluq. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: O Abdur Rahman, what is the reason for this? He replied: I have married an Ansari woman. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: How much dowry did you give her? He replied: Gold equal to the weight of a date stone. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Give a wedding feast, even if it is with a single goat (i.e., slaughter and invite). Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw that after his (i.e., Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf's) death, each of his wives received one hundred thousand (dirhams) as their share.
