Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: His sister was the wife of a certain man. That man divorced her and then left her as she was until her waiting period ('iddah) was over. Then that man sent a proposal for marriage again. Sayyiduna Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry at this and said: He left this woman like that even though he could have taken her back. Sayyiduna Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) became an obstacle in this matter, so Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And when you divorce women and they have fulfilled their waiting period, do not prevent them from marrying their (former) husbands if they agree among themselves in a suitable manner." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In this narration, it is omitted that the woman later married another man (then she was divorced by him or became a widow, and then the first husband sent a marriage proposal).
