Salim narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both): Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, stated: The husband of Hafsa bint Umar, Sayyiduna Khunais bin Hudhafa Sahmi, may Allah be pleased with him, passed away. He was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and had the honor of participating in the Battle of Badr. He passed away in Madinah Munawwarah. Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, says: I met Sayyiduna Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, and offered him marriage to Hafsa. I said: If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsa bint Umar. He said: I will consider this matter. Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, says: After a few days, he met me and informed me: I do not wish to marry at this time. Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, says: Then I met Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and I said: If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsa bint Umar. But he did not give me any answer. I was more upset with him than with Sayyiduna Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him. Then a few days passed, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me a proposal of marriage. I married Hafsa to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Then I met Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and he said: When you offered me Hafsa’s hand in marriage, I did not give you any answer, and perhaps because of this you are upset with me. I replied: Yes. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: When you made me this offer, I did not reply to you because I had heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) mention (marrying) Hafsa. I did not want to disclose the secret of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). If the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had not done so, I would have married her.
