Hadith 3998
Nafi’ narrates: The year when Hajjaj attacked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), that year Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) intended to perform Hajj. So it was said to him: There is fighting among the people, and we fear that they will not let you (reach Makkah). So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: (The command of Allah, the Exalted, is) “Indeed, for you in the Messenger of Allah is a beautiful example.” In this situation, I will do as the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did. I make you all witnesses that I have made ‘Umrah obligatory upon myself. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) set out, and when he reached the place of Bida’, he said: The method of Hajj and ‘Umrah is the same, so I make you all witnesses that I have made Hajj obligatory upon myself along with my ‘Umrah, and I will take the sacrificial animal with me, which I have already bought from Qudayd. After that, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) proceeded reciting the Talbiyah for both (i.e., Hajj and ‘Umrah), until he reached Makkah, performed Tawaf of the House of Allah and of Safa and Marwah, and did nothing more than this. He did not offer the sacrifice, nor did he shave his head, nor cut his hair short, nor did he become lawful from anything that is forbidden in Ihram, until the day of sacrifice arrived. Then he offered the sacrifice and shaved his head. He understood that when he performed the first Tawaf, by it he had fulfilled the Tawaf for both Hajj and ‘Umrah. He narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had done likewise.
