Chapter on Hajj and Umrah on Behalf of Others – On Permitting a Man to Perform Hajj for a Deceased Person Who Was Obligated
Hadith 3992
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَكِيمُ بْنُ سَيْفٍ الرَّقِّيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ الْبَطِينِ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنْ رَجُلا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ أَبِي مَاتَ وَلَمْ يَحُجَّ ، أَفَأَحُجَّ عَنْهُ ؟ ، قَالَ : " أَرَأَيْتَ لَوَ كَانَ عَلَى أَبِيكَ دَيْنٌ أَكُنْتَ قَاضِيَهُ " ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : " حُجَّ عَنْ أَبِيكَ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: My father has passed away and he did not perform Hajj, so should I perform Hajj on his behalf? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked: What do you think, if your father had a debt, would you pay it off? He replied: Yes. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Then perform Hajj on behalf of your father.
