Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah bin Rabi’i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He was with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) until, on the way to Makkah, at a certain place, he and his companions lagged behind (from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). His companions had put on ihram, but Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) had not put on ihram. Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a wild donkey (i.e., a zebra), so he mounted his horse and requested his companions to hand him his stick, but his companions did not agree to this. Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked them for a spear, but they did not give that either. Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) took it himself, then attacked the zebra and killed it. Some of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ate its meat, and some did not eat its meat. When these people reached the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), they asked him about this matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: This is food which Allah Almighty has fed you.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) to collect Zakat. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions set out wearing Ihram, until they camped in the valley called "Ghazzal" near "Usfan." There was a wild donkey (i.e., a zebra) present there. Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) came; he had not put on Ihram at that time. The other companions, disliking this, lowered their heads so that Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) would not notice (the animal) by following their gaze. Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) also saw (the animal). He mounted his horse and took his spear. His stick fell down, so he said: "Hand this to me." We said: "We will not help you in any way regarding this." So Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) attacked it and killed it. The narrator says: Then he roasted some of its meat. They said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is among us. (The narrator says) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had gone ahead at that time. They went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not see any harm in it. (The narrator says) I think these words are also in the narration: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have any of it (some meat) with you?" This doubt is from the narrator named Ubaydullah.
