Chapter on What Is Permitted and Not Permitted for the Muhrim – On the Prophet Naming the Game Returned to Him as a Gift
Hadith 3969
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنِ الصَّعْبِ بْنِ جَثَّامَةَ اللَّيْثِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ أَهْدَى لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِمَارًا وَحْشِيًّا وَهُوَ بِالأَبْوَاءِ أَوْ بِوَدَّانَ ، فَرَدَّهُ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا فِي وَجْهِي ، قَالَ : " إِنَّا لَمْ نَرُدَّهُ عَلَيْكَ إِلا أَنَّا حُرُمٌ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from Sayyiduna Sa'b bin Jaththamah Al-Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him): He presented the meat of a wild donkey (i.e., zebra) to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was at that time at Abwa or perhaps at Waddan. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not accept it. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saw signs (of distress or regret) on my face, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We have only returned it because we are in the state of Ihram.
