Stoning Jamrat al-Aqabah – On the Description of the Pebbles Used for Stoning
Hadith 3871
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حِبَّانُ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَوْفٌ ، عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْعَالِيَةِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ غَدَاةَ الْعَقَبَةِ وَهُوَ وَاقِفٌ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ : " هَاتِ الْقُطْ لِي " ، فَلَقَطْتُ لَهُ حَصَيَاتٍ ، وَهِيَ حَصَى الْخَذْفِ ، فَلَمَّا وَضَعْتُهُنَّ فِي يَدِهِ ، قَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، بِأَمْثَالِ هَؤُلاءِ ، بِأَمْثَالِ هَؤُلاءِ ، وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْغُلُوَّ فِي الدِّينِ ، فَإِنَّمَا أَهْلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمُ الْغُلُوُّ فِي الدِّينِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: On the morning of Aqabah, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was stationed on his mount. He said: Come forward and pick up pebbles for me. I picked up pebbles for him that were so small they could be held between the fingers. When I placed them in the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: Yes! They should be like this, they should be like this. Beware of exaggeration in religion, for those before you were destroyed because of exaggeration in religion.
