Sa’i between Safa and Marwah - A wording that may suggest to some scholars that Sa’i is not obligatory
Hadith 3841
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دَاوُدَ ، عَنْ فِطْرِ بْنِ خَلِيفَةَ ، عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ وَاثِلَةَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ : إِنَّ قَوْمَكَ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَمَلَ ، وَأَنَّهُ سُنَّةٌ ، فَقَالَ : " كَذَبُوا ، وَصَدَقُوا ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمَّا دَخَلَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمُشْرِكُونَ عَلَى قُعَيْقِعَانَ ، فَتَحَدَّثُوا أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَصْحَابَهُ هَزْلَى ، فَرَمَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَمَرَ أَصْحَابَهُ فَرَمَلُوا ، وَلَيْسَتْ بِسُنَّةٍ " .
Aamir bin Wathilah narrates: I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): Your people say that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed ramal and that this is Sunnah. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: They have stated some things correctly and some things incorrectly. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered Makkah, the polytheists were present at Qaiqan. They were talking among themselves, mocking the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions (saying that they are weak people). So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed ramal and ordered his companions to do ramal as well. (Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) This is not Sunnah.
