Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people and said: O people! Indeed, Allah has made Hajj obligatory upon you. A man stood up and asked: Is it every year? He repeated this question three times, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory, and if it had become obligatory, you would not have been able to do it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Leave me with what I leave you with; for those before you were destroyed only because of their excessive questioning of their prophets and their disagreements with them. So, when I command you to do something, do as much of it as you can, and when I forbid you from something, then avoid it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Hajj with his wives, he said: Indeed, this is the (only) Hajj, and then it is obligatory upon you to remain in your homes. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): The wording of this narration has been used for some women, and by this is meant the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and in this, certain situations are intended. And this is the situation in which it was not obligatory upon these women to establish certain obligations during that state, such as performing prayer and other similar matters.
