Voluntary Fasting - Recommendation to fast Saturdays and Sundays because they are holidays for the People of the Book
Hadith 3646
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفِيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حِبَّانُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : أَرْسَلَنِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ وَنَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنْ أَسْأَلَهَا : أَيُّ الأَيَّامِ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَكْثَرُهَا صَوْمًا ؟ فَقَالَتْ : يَوْمُ السَّبْتِ وَيَوْمُ الأَحَدِ ، فَأَتَيْتُهُمْ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُمْ ، فَأَنْكَرُوا ذَلِكَ عَلَيَّ ، فَظُنُّوا أَنِّي لَمْ أَحْفَظْ فَرَدُّونِي ، فَقَالَتْ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ، فَأَخْبَرْتُهُمْ ، فَقَامُوا بِأَجْمَعِهِمْ ، فَقَالُوا : إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْكِ فِي كَذَا وَكَذَا ، فَزَعَمَ أَنَّكِ قُلْتِ كَذَا وَكَذَا ، فَقَالَتْ : صَدَقَ ، كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصُومُ يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ وَيَوْمَ الأَحَدِ أَكْثَرَ مَا كَانَ يَصُومُ مِنَ الأَيَّامِ ، وَيَقُولُ : " إِنَّهُمَا عِيدَانِ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ ، فَأُحِبُّ أَنْ أُخَالِفَهُمُ " .
Kuraib narrates: Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and some other companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them) sent me to the noble wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), so that I could ask her on which days the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to fast the most. Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: On Saturday and Sunday. I returned to them and informed them about this, but they did not accept my statement. They thought perhaps I had not remembered the matter correctly. They sent me again, and Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave the same answer. I came and informed them, so all of them themselves got up and (presented themselves before Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her). They said: We had sent this person to you regarding this issue, and he has reported that you gave this answer. Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: He has spoken the truth; the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to fast most often on Saturday and Sunday. He used to say: These two are the festival days of the polytheists (they eat and drink on these days), so I wish to act contrary to them.
