Chapter on Voluntary Fasting - Recommending fasting every other day
Hadith 3637
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَوْنٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ كَاسِبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي لَبِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَ : أَتَيْتُ عَائِشَةَ أَسْأَلُهَا عَنْ صِيَامِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَتْ : " كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ : قَدْ صَامَ ، ثُمَّ يُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ : قَدْ أَفْطَرَ ، وَمَا رَأَيْتُهُ بَعْدَ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ أَكْثَرَ صِيَامًا مِنْهُ فِي شَعْبَانَ ، كَانَ يَصُومُهُ كُلَّهُ إِلا قَلِيلا " .
Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrates: I went to Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask her about the fasting routine of the Prophet (peace be upon him). She said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to observe so many voluntary fasts in a month that we would think he would continue fasting, and then he would abandon voluntary fasting (in a month) to the extent that we would think he would not fast. I did not see the Prophet (peace be upon him) fasting in any month more than in Sha'ban, apart from Ramadan. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would not fast on some days of Sha'ban, but would fast for the rest of the month.
