Chapter on Voluntary Fasting - Clarifying that “it expiates the year before it” means only one previous year
Hadith 3632
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ غَيْلانَ بْنِ جَرِيرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَعْبَدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " صِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ إِنِّي أَحْتَسِبَ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ ، وَالسَّنَةَ الَّتِي بَعْدَهُ ، وَصِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ إِنِّي أَحْتَسِبُ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Regarding fasting on the day of Arafah, I hope from Allah Almighty that it expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year (and that one year), and regarding fasting on the day of Ashura, I hope from the grace of Allah Almighty that it expiates the sins of the previous year.
