Chapter on Voluntary Fasting - Allah forgives a year’s sins for fasting Ashura and two years for fasting Arafah
Hadith 3631
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفِيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ الضَّرِيرُ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، عَنْ غَيْلانَ بْنِ جَرِيرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَعْبَدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلا يَصُومُ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ ؟ قَالَ : " ذَاكَ صَوْمُ سَنَةٍ " ، قَالَ : أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلا يَصُومُ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ ؟ قَالَ : " يُكَفِّرُ السَّنَةَ ، وَمَا قَبْلَهَا " .
Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is your opinion about a person who fasts on the day of Ashura? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is equal to fasting for a whole year. He asked: What is your opinion about a person who fasts on the day of Arafah? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It wipes out the sins of the previous year and the coming year.
