Chapter on Voluntary Fasting - Refuting the claim that the option was for Ashura, not Ramadan
Hadith 3624
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحِيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ الأَشَجِّ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ مَوْلَى سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الأَكُوَعِ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " كُنَّا فِي رَمَضَانَ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ وَافْتَدَى بِإِطْعَامِ مِسْكِينٍ ، حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ : فَمَنْ شَهِدَ مِنْكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ سورة البقرة آية 185 " .
Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we used to fast in Ramadan in such a way that whoever wished would fast and whoever wished would leave the fast, and would give fidyah by feeding a poor person, until this verse was revealed: “Whoever among you witnesses the month of Ramadan, then he should fast in it.”
