Section on Fasting Saturday - Warning against fasting Saturday alone
Hadith 3615
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُبَشِّرُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، عَنْ حَسَّانَ بْنِ نُوحٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ بُسْرٍ الْمَازِنِيَّ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : تَرَوْنَ يَدِي هَذِهِ ؟ بَايَعْتُ بِهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَسَمِعْتُهُ ، يَقُولُ : " لا تَصُومُوا يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ إِلا فِيمَا افْتُرِضَ عَلَيْكُمْ ، وَلَوْ لَمْ يَجِدْ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلا لِحَاءَ شَجَرَةٍ فَلِيُفْطِرْ عَلَيْهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Busr Mazani, who was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), says: "You have seen these hands of mine; with them I pledged allegiance on the blessed hand of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). I heard him say: 'Do not fast on Saturday, except for the fast that is obligatory upon you. And if a person finds only the root of a tree to chew (to break the fast on Saturday), then he should break his fast with that.'"
