Section on Fasting the Day of Doubt - Permitting fasting the day of doubt if the crescent is obscured
Hadith 3597
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السَّامِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحِيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الْمَقَابِرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : وَأَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوَا الْهِلالَ ، وَلا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ ، إِلا أَنْ يُغَمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not begin fasting until you see the crescent (of the new month), and do not celebrate Eid al-Fitr until you see it. However, if it is cloudy for you, then the ruling is different; if it is cloudy for you, then complete the counting (of the days)."
