Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him: "Do not observe continuous fasting (wisal)." The people said, "O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon you! You also observe continuous fasting." The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I am not like you. I spend the night in such a state that my Lord gives me food and drink." The people did not refrain from observing continuous fasting. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, made them observe continuous fasting for two days and two nights. Then the people saw the new moon, so the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If the new moon had been delayed, I would have made you observe these fasts even more," as if the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, admonished them.
