Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: I have come to know that you observe voluntary fasts every day and spend the whole night in voluntary prayers. I replied: Yes, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not do so; (at night) you should also sleep and also offer voluntary prayers, (during the day) you should also observe voluntary fasts and also leave them, because your body has a right over you, your guest has a right over you, your wife has a right over you. I am giving you the option that you may fast three days in every month; every good deed is rewarded tenfold, so this will be equivalent to fasting the whole month. I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! (I feel capable of fasting more than this.) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then fast three days in every week. The narrator says: I insisted on more, so more was prescribed for me. I submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I feel capable of more than this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then fast as the Prophet of Allah, Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him), used to fast, and do not fast more than that. I asked: What was the method of fasting of the Prophet of Allah, Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Half of the time (i.e., fasting one day and not fasting the next day). (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "Your visitor also has a right over you," these words are narrated only in this narration, and in this is evidence that when a guest or visitor comes to the house, it is permissible for a person to break (voluntary) fasts.
