Chapter on Fasting for Others - Refuting the claim that fasting on behalf of another is not allowed
Hadith 3570
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ، بِالْكَرْخِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْكِنْدِيُّ ، حدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الأَحْمَرُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ ، وَمُسْلِمٌ الْبَطِينِ ، وسلمة بن كهيل ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، وَعَطَاءٍ ، وَمُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ أُخْتِي مَاتَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا صِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَرَأَيْتِ لَوَ كَانَ عَلَى أُخْتِكِ دَيْنٌ أَكُنْتِ تَقْضِينَهُ ؟ " ، قَالَتْ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : " فَحَقُّ اللَّهِ أَحَقُّ " .
Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates: A woman came to the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! My sister has passed away. She was obliged to fast for two consecutive months. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: What do you think, if your sister had a debt, would you pay it off? She replied: Yes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The right of Allah is more deserving to be fulfilled.
