Chapter on Fasting While Traveling - Sometimes those who break the fast while traveling are better than those who fast
Hadith 3559
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَوْنٍ الرَّيَّانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَلْمُ بْنُ جُنَادَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الأَحُوَلُ ، عَنْ مُوَرِّقٍ الْعِجْلِيِّ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَفَرٍ ، فَمِنَّا الصَّائِمُ ، وَمِنَّا الْمُفْطِرُ ، وَنَزَلْنَا مَنْزِلا يَوْمًا حَارًّا شَدِيدَ الْحَرِّ ، فَمِنَّا مِنْ يَتَّقِي الشَّمْسَ بِيَدِهِ ، وَأَكْثَرُنَا ظِلا صَاحِبُ كِسَاءٍ يَسْتَظِلُّ بِهِ الصَّائِمُونَ ، وَقَامَ الْمُفْطِرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ الأَبْنِيَةَ وَيُصْلِحُونَ الرَّكَائِبَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " ذَهَبَ الْمُفْطِرُونَ الِيَوْمَ بِالأَجْرِ " .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were traveling with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Some of us were fasting and some were not. On a very hot day, we stopped at a place. Some of us were shielding ourselves from the sun with our hands, and the person who had a cloak had the most shade, and the fasting people were using it for shade. Those who were not fasting got up, pitched tents, and took care of the mounts, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Today, those who did not fast have taken the reward.
