Chapter on Fasting While Traveling - Reason why the Prophet commanded breaking the fast
Hadith 3550
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفِيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حِبَّانُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى نَهَرٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ السَّمَاءِ ، وَهُوَ عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ لَهُ ، وَالنَّاسُ صِيَامٌ ، فَقَالَ : " اشْرَبُوا " ، فَجَعَلُوا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : " اشْرَبُوا ، فَإِنِّي رَاكِبٌ ، وَإِنِّي أَيَسَرُّكُمْ ، وَأَنْتُمْ مُشَاةٌ " ، فَجَعَلُوا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيْهِ ، فَحَوَّلَ وَرِكَهُ فَشَرِبَ وَشَرِبَ النَّاسُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us at the canal of rainwater: At that time, you were mounted on your mule and the people were fasting. You said: You people drink water. The people began to look towards the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You people drink water, because I am mounted, I am in an easier state than you, you people are walking on foot. The people again began to look towards the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) moved to his side. You drank water, so the people also drank water.
