Chapter on Breaking the Fast and Hastening It - Refuting those who deny observing times for acts of worship
Hadith 3510
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي صَفُوَانَ الثَّقَفِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفِيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا تَزَالُ أُمَّتِي عَلَى سُنَّتِي مَا لَمْ تَنْتَظِرْ بِفِطْرِهَا النُّجُومَ " ، قَالَ : وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا كَانَ صَائِمًا أَمَرَ رَجُلا فَأَوْفِي عَلَى شَيْءٍ ، فَإِذَا قَالَ : " غَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ " ، أَفْطَرَ .
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “My Ummah will remain upon my Sunnah as long as they do not wait for the stars (to appear) for breaking the fast.” The narrator states: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was fasting, he would instruct someone to climb a high place and observe; when that person informed him that the sun had set, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would break his fast.
