Chapter on Etiquette of Fasting - Indicating that saying “I am fasting” is intended in the heart, not verbally
Hadith 3483
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ ، عَنْ عَجْلانَ ، مَوْلَى الْمُشْمَعِلِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لا تَسَابَّ وَأَنْتَ صَائِمٌ ، وَإِنْ سَابَّكَ أَحَدٌ ، فَقُلْ : إِنِّي صَائِمٌ ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ قَائِمًا فَاجْلِسْ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him: "When you are fasting, do not speak ill of anyone. If someone speaks ill to you, then say, 'I am fasting,' and if you are standing, then sit down."
