Chapter on Etiquette of Fasting - Warning against breaking the fast with words or actions not pleasing to Allah
Hadith 3481
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَحْطَبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبَانَ الْقُرَشِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " رُبَّ قَائِمٍ حَظُّهُ مِنْ قِيَامِهِ السَّهَرُ ، وَرُبَّ صَائِمٍ حَظُّهُ مِنْ صِيَامِهِ الْجُوعُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "There are many who perform voluntary prayers, but from their standing (in prayer at night) they gain nothing except staying awake (they do not receive any reward), and there are many who fast, but from their fasting they gain nothing except hunger (they do not receive any reward)."
