Chapter on Sighting the Crescent - Another report that may mislead some into thinking the month is always twenty-nine days
Hadith 3450
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كَمْ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ ؟ " ، يَعْنِي رَمَضَانَ ، قُلْنَا : ثِنْتَانِ وَعِشْرُونَ ، وَبَقِيَ ثَمَانٍ ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَضَتْ ثِنْتَانِ وَعِشْرُونَ ، وَبَقِيَ سَبْعٌ ، فَاطْلُبُوهَا اللَّيْلَةَ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا " ، ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ عَشَرَةً عَشَرَةً مَرَّتَيْنِ ، وَوَاحِدَةٌ تِسْعَةٌ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: How many days are left for the month (to end)? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) meant the month of Ramadan. We replied: Twenty-two (22) days have passed and eight days are left. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Twenty-two (22) days have passed and seven days are left; seek it in tonight. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The month is like this and like this. He said this three times, twice indicating ten and once indicating nine.
