Chapter on Sighting the Crescent - Clarifying that “estimate” means to complete thirty days
Hadith 3443
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحِيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلالَ ، فَصُومُوا ، وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ ، فَأَفْطِرُوا ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ ، فَعُدُّوا ثَلاثِينَ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you see the new moon (of Ramadan), start fasting, and when you see it (the new moon of Shawwal), celebrate Eid al-Fitr. If the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the count of thirty days."
