Chapter on the Virtue of Ramadan - Warning against claiming to have fasted all of Ramadan out of fear of falling short
Hadith 3439
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُكْرَمِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْبِرْتِيُّ ، بِبَغْدَادَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحِيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْمُهَلَّبُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لا يَقُولَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ : إِنِّي صُمْتُ رَمَضَانَ كُلَّهُ وَقُمْتُهُ " ، قَالَ : فَلا أَدْرِي أَكَرِهَ التَّزْكِيَةَ ، أَمْ قَالَ : " لا بُدَّ مِنْ رَقْدَةٍ أَوْ غَفَلَةٍ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No person should ever say, 'I fasted the entire Ramadan and performed voluntary prayers throughout the whole Ramadan.'" The narrator says: I do not know whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked expressing one's acts of worship, or whether he (peace and blessings be upon him) meant to say that a person should also sleep during Ramadan.
