Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) prepared an army. I presented myself before him and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon you)! Pray for martyrdom for me." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "O Allah! Keep these people safe and grant them war booty." We participated in the battle, we remained safe, and we were granted war booty, to the extent that the narrator mentioned this three times. The narrator says: Then I presented myself before the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon you)! I have come to you three times and requested you to pray for martyrdom for me, but you said, 'O Allah! Keep these people safe and grant them war booty.' O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon you)! We have remained safe and have been granted war booty. Now command me regarding an action by which I may enter Paradise." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Fasting is incumbent upon you, for there is nothing like it." The narrator says: So, smoke was never seen coming from the house of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) during the day, except on a day when a guest was present. When smoke was seen coming from his house during the day, people would know that a guest had come to him. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): Mahdi bin Maymun narrated this from Muhammad bin Abu Ya'qub from Raja, while Shu'bah narrated this from Muhammad bin Abu Ya'qub from Humayd bin Hilal from Raja.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Guide me towards a deed." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You must observe fasting, for there is nothing equal to it." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): This narrator named Abu Nasr is Humaid bin Hilal. I do not deny the possibility that Muhammad bin Abu Ya'qub heard this narration in detail from Raja', and then he heard a part of it from Humaid bin Hilal, so both of its chains will be preserved.
