Chapter: Asking and Receiving – Ordering to Accept What is Given Without Prior Request
Hadith 3405
أخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ مَوْهَبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ الأَشَجِّ ، عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ السَّاعِدِيِّ الْمَالِكِيِّ ، قَالَ : اسْتَعْمَلَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ عَلَى الصَّدَقَةِ ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغْتُ مِنْهَا ، وَأَدَّيْتُهَا إِلَيْهِ ، أَمَرَ لِيَ بِعُمَالَةٍ ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : إِنَّمَا عَمِلْتُ لِلَّهِ ، وَأَجْرِي عَلَى اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : خُذْ مَا أُعْطِيتَ ، فَإِنِّي قَدْ قُلْتُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِعَمَلِي مِثْلَ قَوْلِكَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا أُعْطِيتَ شَيْئًا مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ تَسْأَلَ ، فَكُلْ وَتَصَدَّقْ " .
Ibn Sa'di al-Maliki narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed me as the supervisor for collecting Zakat. When I finished and handed over the payment to him, he ordered that I be given a salary. I said to him: I did this work for the pleasure of Allah and my reward is with Allah. He said: Accept what is being given to you, because during the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I also did this work and said the same thing that you have said, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When something is given to you without you asking for it, then use it yourself and also give charity from it."
