Chapter: Asking and Receiving – Warning Against Taking What is Given Out of Worldly Desire
Hadith 3402
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الزَّهْرَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا فُلَيْحٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ ، وَسَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، أَنَّ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَعْطَانِي ، ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا حَكِيمُ ، إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ حُلُوَةٌ خَضِرَةٌ ، فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ ، وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ ، وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلا يَشْبَعُ ، وَالِيَدُ الْعُلِيَا أَخِيَرُ مِنَ الِيَدِ السُّفْلَى " ، قَالَ حَكِيمٌ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لا أَرْزَأُ أَحَدًا بَعْدَكَ شَيْئًا حَتَّى أُفَارِقَ الدُّنِيَا .
Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for something, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave it to me. I asked again, and he gave it to me again. This happened three times. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Hakim, this wealth is sweet and lush. Whoever acquires it with generosity of the soul, it is blessed for him. And whoever acquires it with greed of the soul, there is no blessing in it for him, and he is like the one who eats but is never satisfied. The upper hand is better than the lower hand." Sayyiduna Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! By the One Who has sent you with the truth, I will never ask anything from anyone after you until I die."
