Chapter: Asking and Receiving – Report That May Be Misunderstood as Contradicting the Hadith of Qabisah ibn Mukhariq
Hadith 3397
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ السَّعْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ خَشْرَمٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدُبٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا الْمَسَائِلُ كُدُوحٌ يَكْدَحُ بِهَا الرَّجُلُ وَجْهَهُ ، فمَنْ شَاءَ أَبْقَى عَلَى وَجْهِهِ ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ تَرَكَ ، إِلا أَنْ يَسْأَلَ ذَا سُلْطَانٍ ، أَوْ فِي أَمْرٍ لا يَجِدُ مِنْهُ بُدًّا " .
Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Begging is a scratch, through which a person scratches his own face. So whoever wishes, let him leave it on his face, and whoever wishes, let him abandon it. However, it is permissible to ask from the ruler (or the relevant government official from government revenue) or in a situation of extreme necessity."
