Ibn Hibban

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Once a man was present in a deserted place when he saw a cloud and heard a voice in it (that is, an angel commanded the cloud), "Water the garden of so-and-so." Then the cloud came there and rained on a rocky ground. The man says, when I reached that place, I saw some streams flowing from there, and one of the streams was filled with water, irrigating a certain place. I reached a man there who was standing and working in his garden with a shovel, irrigating it. I asked him, "O servant of Allah, what is your name?" He replied, "So-and-so." It was the same name that the man had heard in the cloud. The man asked, "O servant of Allah, why are you asking me my name?" He replied, "I heard in the cloud from which this water came, an angel saying, 'Water the garden of so-and-so,' and he mentioned your name. So tell me, what do you do in this garden?" He said, "Now that you have said this, I will tell you: whatever produce comes from it, I give one third of it in charity, spend one third on myself and my wife and children, and reinvest one third back into it."
