Voluntary Charity – Ordering to Prefer Relatives Over Others in Charity
Hadith 3340
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ، يَقُولُ : كَانَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ أَكْثَرَ أَنْصَارِيٍّ بِالْمَدِينَةِ مَالا ، وَكَانَ أَحَبَّ أَمُوَالِهِ إِلَيْهِ بَيْرَحَاءُ ، وَكَانَتْ مُسْتَقْبِلَةَ الْمَسْجِدِ ، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدْخُلُهَا ، وَيَشْرَبُ مِنْ مَاءٍ فِيهَا طَيِّبٍ ، قَالَ أَنَسٌ : فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ لَنْ تَنَالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّى تُنْفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ سورة آل عمران آية 92 ، قَامَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَقُولُ فِي كِتَابِهِ : لَنْ تَنَالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّى تُنْفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ سورة آل عمران آية 92 ، وَإِنَّ أَحَبَّ أَمُوَالِي إِلَيَّ بَيْرَحَاءُ ، فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ لِلَّهِ أَرْجُو بِرَّهَا وَذُخْرَهَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ ، فَضَعْهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ حَيْثُ شِئْتَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " بَخٍ ، ذَاكَ مَالٌ رَابِحٌ ، بَخٍ ذَاكَ مَالٌ رَابِحٌ ، وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ مَا قُلْتَ فِيهَا ، وَإِنِّي أَرَى أَنْ تَجْعَلَهَا فِي الأَقْرَبِينَ " ، فَقَالَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ : أَفْعَلُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَقَسَمَهَا أَبُو طَلْحَةَ فِي أَقَارِبِهِ وَبَنِي عَمِّهِ .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In Madinah Munawwarah, Sayyiduna Abu Talhah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) had the most land among the Ansar, and his most beloved property was a garden called "Bairuha," which was situated directly opposite the mosque. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit this garden and drink its sweet water. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When this verse was revealed, "You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love," Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Allah Almighty has stated in His Book, "You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love." My most beloved wealth to me is "Bairuha." I give it as charity for Allah; I hope for its reward and recompense from Allah Almighty. O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Spend it wherever you wish. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Excellent! This is a profitable wealth, excellent! This is a profitable wealth. I have heard what you have said about it, and I think you should distribute it among your relatives. Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I will do so. (Sayyiduna Anas [may Allah be pleased with him] narrates:) So Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) distributed it among his close relatives and his paternal cousins.
