Voluntary Charity – Clarifying That Charity to Close Relatives is Better Than to Distant Ones
Hadith 3337
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ بْنِ وَرْدَانَ الْبَزَّازُ ، بِالْفُسْطَاطِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلانَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَوْمًا لأَصْحَابِهِ : " تَصَدَّقُوا " ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، عِنْدِي دِينَارٌ ، قَالَ : " أَنْفِقْهُ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ " ، قَالَ : إِنَّ عِنْدِي آخَرَ ، قَالَ : " أَنْفِقْهُ عَلَى زَوْجَتِكَ " ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ عِنْدِي آخَرَ ، قَالَ : " أَنْفِقْهُ عَلَى وَلَدِكَ " ، قَالَ : إِنَّ عِنْدِي آخَرَ ، قَالَ : " أَنْفِقْهُ عَلَى خَادِمِكَ " ، قَالَ : إِنَّ عِنْدِي آخَرَ ، قَالَ " أَنْتَ أَبْصَرُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his companions one day: "Give charity." One man said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! I have one dinar." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Spend it on yourself." He said: "If I have another?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Spend it on your wife." He said: "If I have another?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Spend it on your children." He said: "If I have another?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Spend it on your servant." He asked: "If I have another?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "You know best." (Meaning, you will know yourself on whom it should be spent.)
