Voluntary Charity – Clarifying That Only What One Sends Ahead for the Hereafter Remains of One’s Wealth
Hadith 3327
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ الْجُمَحِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ الدَّسْتُوَائِيُّ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الشِّخِّيرِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَقْرَأُ : " أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ سورة التكاثر آية 1 " ، قَالَ : " يَقُولُ ابْنُ آدَمَ : مَالِي مَالِي ، وَهَلْ لَكَ مِنْ مَالِكَ إِلا مَا أَكَلْتَ فَأَفْنَيْتَ ، أَوْ لَبِسْتَ فَأَبْلَيْتَ ، أَوْ تَصَدَّقْتَ فَأَمْضَيْتَ " .
Mutarrif bin Abdullah narrates from his father: I presented myself before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) while he was reciting this verse: "Competition in [worldly] increase diverts you." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The son of Adam says, "My wealth, my wealth," although your wealth is only that which you consume and finish, or that which you wear and wear out, or that which you give in charity and send ahead.
